Calculation result
Formula and calculation method
Contribution per unit = selling price − variable cost. Exact break-even units = fixed cost ÷ contribution. Target-profit units = (fixed cost + target profit) ÷ contribution. Whole-unit requirements round upward.
Worked example
Fixed cost ₹12,000, selling price ₹250 and variable cost ₹150 produce ₹100 contribution and break-even at 120 units, or ₹30,000 revenue. A target profit of ₹8,000 requires 200 units, or ₹50,000 revenue.
Assumptions and limitations
Price must exceed variable cost for a finite break-even point. The model assumes constant unit costs and one product. It does not forecast demand, handle changing fixed-cost bands, or include unentered tax or financing costs. Align the cost period and target-profit period.

Frequently asked questions
Why are whole units rounded upward?
A partial unit may not be sellable. Rounding upward gives the first whole-unit volume that covers the specified costs.
What if price equals variable cost?
There is no positive contribution to cover fixed costs, so no finite break-even volume exists in this model.
