Formula and calculation method
Addition/subtraction: a/b ± c/d = (a×d ± c×b)/(b×d). Multiplication: a/b × c/d = (a×c)/(b×d). Division: a/b ÷ c/d = (a×d)/(b×c), where c is not zero. Reduce numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.
Worked example
1/3 + 1/6 = (1×6 + 1×3)/(3×6) = 9/18 = 1/2. A negative denominator is normalised so the sign is shown in the numerator. Enter a mixed number as an improper fraction: 1 1/2 becomes 3/2.
Assumptions and limitations
Inputs accept signed integers of up to 18 digits. Denominators cannot be zero, and division by a zero fraction is invalid. Integer arithmetic preserves the exact fraction; the displayed decimal is a rounded approximation. This does not solve algebraic expressions.

Frequently asked questions
Can I enter a mixed number?
Convert it to an improper fraction first. For example, 1 1/2 is entered as numerator 3 and denominator 2.
Why can the decimal look rounded?
The fraction result is exact; the separate decimal output is an approximation.
