Tip Calculator

Work out how much to tip, the total bill, and how much each person owes when splitting with a group — all instantly.

How Tip Calculation Works

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × Tip % ÷ 100. Total = Bill Amount + Tip Amount. When splitting, Amount Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People. For example, a ₹1,000 bill with a 15% tip split between 2 people means a ₹150 tip, a ₹1,150 total, and ₹575 per person.

Tipping Norms Around the World

Tipping expectations vary enormously by country, and using the wrong percentage can feel awkward in either direction. In the United States, 15–20% is standard at sit-down restaurants and often expected even for average service. In much of Europe, a service charge is frequently already included in the bill, so an additional 5–10% (or simply rounding up) is seen as a generous but optional gesture. In Japan, tipping can actually be considered impolite in many settings, since excellent service is viewed as the baseline, not something that warrants extra payment. Knowing the local norm before you travel avoids both under-tipping and over-tipping.

Tipping on the Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Total?

A common point of confusion is whether to calculate a tip on the subtotal (before tax) or the total (after tax). Etiquette guides generally recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since the tax portion isn’t part of what the server or service provider actually earned for you. In practice, many people simplify by tipping on the full receipt total anyway, which usually only adds a small amount extra. Either approach is broadly accepted — consistency and generosity matter more than which base amount you technically use.

Splitting a Tip and Bill Between a Group

When splitting a bill among several people, it’s easiest to calculate the total bill plus tip first, then divide the combined amount by the number of people — rather than each person separately calculating their own tip on their individual share, which tends to produce small mismatches and awkward rounding. This calculator’s per-person option handles that division automatically once you enter the group size, so everyone pays an equal, correctly-rounded share.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a tip amount calculated?

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × Tip % ÷ 100. The Total is the bill plus the tip, and if you’re splitting with others, that total is divided evenly by the number of people.

What is a standard tip percentage?

Common tip percentages are 10% for average service, 15% for good service, and 18-20% for excellent service, though customs vary widely by country and type of establishment.

How do I split a bill and tip among a group?

Enter the total bill, choose a tip percentage, and set the number of people. The calculator adds the tip to the bill and divides the combined total evenly, showing exactly how much each person owes.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Conventions differ, but many people tip on the pre-tax bill total. If your receipt already includes tax, you can still use this calculator on that total if you prefer to tip on the post-tax amount.

Can I calculate a tip without splitting the bill?

Yes. Simply leave the number of people at 1, and the calculator will show the tip amount and total for a single payer.

What this calculator estimates

A tip is a percentage or fixed amount added to a bill. Confirm whether service charge is already included before adding another tip.

Formula and method

Tip = bill amount × tip rate. Total = bill amount + tip. Per-person total = total ÷ number of people.

Worked examples

  1. A 15% tip on ₹2,000 is ₹300, making the total ₹2,300.
  2. A ₹3,600 total split among four people is ₹900 per person.

Methodology and assumptions

The selected tip rate is applied to the entered bill base and added to the bill. Equal split divides the resulting total by the stated party size. The calculator does not detect an existing service charge or decide whether tax is included in the tip base.
