Frequently Asked Questions

What GST rate applies to restaurants in India?

Most standalone restaurants (with or without air conditioning, without a liquor licence) charge 5% GST without input tax credit. Restaurants located inside hotels charging a room tariff above the notified threshold, or those opting for the regular scheme, may charge 18% GST with input tax credit.

What is the GST Composition Scheme for restaurants?

Small restaurants with annual turnover up to ₹1.5 crore can opt into the Composition Scheme, paying a flat, lower GST rate on total turnover. However, composition-scheme restaurants cannot show GST separately on customer bills or claim input tax credit on purchases.

Is a service charge the same as GST?

No. Service charge is a discretionary fee the restaurant sets and keeps itself, while GST is a mandatory government tax. Both can appear as separate line items on the same bill, but they serve completely different purposes.

Does GST apply to takeaway and food delivery orders too?

Yes. The same GST rate that applies to dine-in food also applies to takeaway orders and food delivered through apps or directly by the restaurant.

How do I calculate GST on a restaurant bill?

Enter the pre-tax food bill amount above and select the applicable rate to see the GST amount and final total. If you have a GST-inclusive total and want to find the base food cost, switch to “Remove GST” mode instead.
